It's not UNLV basketball season without hearing a “SLAAAAM DUNK” from Jon Sandler on the radio.
As the voice of the program for over 20 years, Sandler has become synonymous with the Runnin’ Rebels, working alongside former greats Glen Gondrezick, Robert Smith, and most recently Curtis Terry.
However, you may not know his experience extends well beyond the UNLV campus, as he has been a prominent presence in the Las Vegas sports landscape for more than 30 years. After coming to town in 1993 as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Las Vegas Stars, Sandler also handled radio and television broadcast duties for the Las Vegas Thunder, eventually becoming the director of marketing, broadcasting, and public relations for both teams in 2000. In 2001 he was named vice president of sales and marketing for the Las Vegas Outlaws, helping lead the city’s foray into the XFL.
Jon then arrived at UNLV the same year as Lon Kruger for the beginning of the 2003-04 season, also calling Rebel baseball and football games, and has been bringing the action to Rebel fans ever since.
While it might be easy to think of him as a local alumni, Sandler is a graduate of Stanford with a law degree from the University of Virginia, working as a corporate lawyer before eventually trading one court for another, and following his passion to the world of sports broadcasting.
It is this passion that comes through on every play call, vocalizing a fans perspective with the pride of a constant professional. Passion and pride. That sounds like Vegas. That’s “The Sounds of Sandler”.
